Lent and Easter
We include Lent and Easter as one unit, since one prepares for the other
We set up our Lenten calendar as we prepare for the Crucifiction, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord. The children are asked to make a small sacrifice each day as they journey through the forty days of Lent following a lenten jpourney activities sheet.
We take a break to celebrate Saint Patrick. He brought the faith to pagan Ireland and overcame many difficulties
On St Joseph's day we have a feast with all the traditional easter breads, nut rolls and other sweets to celebrate St.Joseph's role as the stepfather of Jesus.
On Palm Sunday we make Palm Crosses with the children in the faith formation classes
We found a young man whose family made the traditional pysanky eggs and he very kindly agreed to come every Saturday for 6 Saturdays so that we could all make beautiful Pysanky eggs
Everyone is encouraged to participate in the blessing of the Easter baskets; Each family is encouraged to make their own basket and bring it to be blessed on Easter Saturday; the children learn the special meaning of each food as it relates to Easter.
We have a Jesse eggs game appropriate of the teen group. There are 18 items. We place one in each egg and mix them up. Each child draws an egg and has to tell what that particular item represents, in the Resurrection story. for example..the three nails were used to nail Jesus to the cross
